It’s the day of truth for Italy as their hope of going to Malaga is at stake against Chile. Doubles which currently sees the use of the Bolelli-Vavassori duo even if the Piedmontese still has back problems and could be replaced when it comes time to take the field.

Arnaldi starts with an understandable tension between his debut and the weight of the match. In the first two rounds of service he ends up behind in the score and has to chase but never loses his composure. However, at 2-2, when he was ahead 30-0, the Sanremo player allowed himself to be caught and finally broke serve, ending up 3-2 down. The Sanremo player tries to fight but the Chilean confirms the advantage and goes up 4-2. The Italian public is enthusiastic but the Chileans also make themselves heard. Garin doesn’t forget that he was top 20 despite being ranked 103 and in the eighth game he still has a break point which he grabs for a lethal double advantage, 5-2, to close the first set 6-2.
