The defending champions were disenchanted in the first group game. SC Magdeburg suffered a clear and well-deserved defeat in their own stadium against HC Veszprem.
Less than three months after winning the Champions League, SC Magdeburg suffered a severe setback in the new season of the premier class. The Elbestadt team lost 28:33 (18:21) against the Hungarian top team HC Veszprem.
Damgaard and little else
Michael Damgaard scored the first goal of the game for the SCM, who struggled defensively. Veszprem’s Nedim Remili imposed his game on the defending champions, and Magdeburg’s keeper Nikola Portner didn’t even come into the game. Even though the hosts were briefly in the lead after two goals from Felix Claar (7th minute), the first half belonged to the Hungarian record champions. Hugo Descat put Veszprem ahead for the first time with three goals after 22 minutes.
SCM coach Bennet Wiegert wanted to see more fight, but his team didn’t provide it. A change of goalkeeper to Sergey Hernandez also had little effect, too many throws from the backcourt went into the Saxony-Anhalt goal. Even if 18 goals in one half against a top team like Veszprem spoke for a good offensive performance: Magdeburg’s defense was poor. We went into the dressing room three goals behind.
Veszprem silences the hall
After the break the defense seemed to have improved, with Matthias Musche scoring twice at the front. Philipp Weber reduced the score to 21:22 in the 35th minute. But then the offensive actions no longer worked, Veszprem got back into its own game, went on a 4-0 run and was clearly ahead in the 42nd minute (21:26 from Magdeburg’s perspective). The Hungarian record champions then let the clock run down and kept the home team at bay. The hall, which was not completely sold out, became noticeably quieter as the guests played too hard. Damgaard was the most successful shooter at the SCM with six goals (six goals) ahead of Claar and Magnusson (five each). On Sunday (September 17th, 4:30 p.m. live in the ticker at sport-im-osten.de and in the SpiO app), the Elbe city residents will host Lemgo before they travel to FC Barcelona on Thursday (September 21st).
