On Tuesday 8 March 2022, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Sigrid Kaag will give a speech in Maastricht about the European course of the Rutte IV cabinet. In the speech, the minister discussed the importance of good European cooperation. The minister will then pay a working visit to a cross-border cooperation project in Belgium that aims to reduce litter in the Meuse.

During her speech, Minister Kaag talks about community and connection as the basis of European unification. We sometimes seem to have lost sight of those foundations today. While this time, with geopolitical tensions, a pandemic and the climate problem, calls for European cooperation. The Netherlands wants to play a pioneering role in a strong and decisive Union. In the speech, Minister Kaag explains the most important priorities in the field of finance, climate and the Union as a community of values.

Minister Kaag will give her speech in the Sint Janskerk on the Vrijthof, the central square of Maastricht. This city is inextricably linked to Europe and European integration through the Maastricht Treaty, the EU’s founding treaty signed exactly 30 years ago in 1992. The speech and the working visit are organized by Studio Europe Maastrichta center of expertise for Europe-related debate and research.

Working together across the border

The border regions in the Netherlands experience the benefits and challenges of cross-border cooperation on a daily basis. In the Live project (litter free rivers and streams) In the Meuse-Rhine Euregion, authorities from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands work together. With the support of a contribution from the Interreg Euregio Maas-Rhine subsidy fund, they focus on reducing plastic waste in the river Maas. During a visit to this project, Minister Kaag will discuss the daily practice of community and connection in the border region with Dutch and Belgian stakeholders.
