Situation open in the goal
He stood between the posts for Hertha BSC for nine years. After his termination by the club around a year ago, Rune Jarstein and the second division team have been talking in court since Thursday about a financial agreement – but apparently also about a possible new commitment. As the “Picture“-Zeitung reports, Hertha’s management, in the person of President Kay Bernstein and managing director Thomas Herrich, has spoken to the Norwegian’s advisor by telephone at least twice in the past few days about a possible return and made an offer. A lawyer for the second division team explained that there had been an exchange, but no official offer.
After the cross-competition suspension and the unclear situation of new signing Marius Gersbeck (background), the Berliners started the season with Oliver Christensen, who has since moved to Florence, as goalkeeper; youngster Tjark Ernst was in goal in the last three games.
At 20 years old, he can almost be described as a veteran compared to Robert Kwasigroch (19) and Tim Goller (18), who were brought up from the second team – against this background, Hertha’s possible ambition with regard to Jarstein also seems clear: The An experienced keeper could stabilize the situation in goal and give his young successors support and security. Only newly promoted Elversberg conceded more goals on the first five matchdays of the 2nd Bundesliga than the “Old Lady” (for an overview).
It remains to be seen whether the fronts between Jarstein and Hertha will soften again. The keeper sued against the termination of his employment contract last year, and the trial has now started before the Berlin Labor Court. No judgment has yet been made; rather, both parties are given time to agree on a settlement or withdrawal of the lawsuit. Only in the second instance would it go to the Berlin-Brandenburg State Labor Court.
Jarstein, who kept clean sheets 52 times in 179 games for Hertha, is said to have had a heated argument with goalkeeping coach Andreas Menger in the run-up to the second matchday of last season, which the then sports director Fredi Bobic described as ” “a little bit more violent”.

On Thursday, the newspaper quoted the argument between Jarstein and Menger from the first day of the trial as follows: “The judge read out that Jarstein had said about goalkeeping coach Andreas Menger: ‘You are a liar.’ Menger is said to have replied: ‘You portray me as a liar, as if I were an asshole.’ Jarstein’s harsh counterattack: ‘You’re an asshole, a liar, an incompetent! You have to go!’”
According to the newspaper, the court offered both parties a settlement of 350,000 euros when the trial started, which is now being discussed.
