Although three quarters of employers indicate that they pay attention to road safety, only 1 in 3 of the surveyed group of employers have taken measures to prevent distraction for their employees in traffic as much as possible. This is apparent from a survey among 200 employers and 600 employees (private and public organisations, large and small). The research was carried out by Arcadis on behalf of MONO business† The purpose of MONO-business is to encourage employers to take measures to prevent accidents caused by distraction. Occupational health and safety does not only apply on site, but also on the road. The survey also found that employers need real-world examples that they could adopt. That’s what MONO business offers.
Minister Mark Harbers (Infrastructure and Water Management): “Every year 30 billion kilometers are driven for an employer. Think of SMEs, consultants, couriers and transport companies. This means that employers are also an important party to make these kilometers safe. That is why, together with the MONO business community, we provide concrete tools and examples of how the MONO principles can be incorporated into business operations to ensure that employees are ‘Arbo-proof’ on the road. I therefore call on BV Nederland to strive together this year to double the number of employers that have included MONO measures in their business operations and to share good examples from practice with each other and with MONO business.”
Distraction in traffic
Distraction in traffic is a major cause of accidents. Not with your eyes and attention to the road for a while is life-threatening. When reading and writing messages, you are not focused on traffic, whether on a phone or through an ‘in-car’ system. And a new temptation has been added, namely online meetings. Also, the fact that modern cars have driver assistance systems does not mean that you can do something else in the meantime. You must always be able to intervene quickly if a system reacts differently than you expect and that is only possible if you keep your attention on the traffic.
Of the employees surveyed, 68% think it is important that distractions are avoided on the road. This is usually done by drawing up rules of conduct. 32% of employees communicate with colleagues while driving. 11% sometimes reads messages on the phone while driving and 7% sometimes looks up information on the road. click here for all research results.
