BK Beerpong settles in Lichtervelde
Antwerp did not give permission for the championship to take place because it would encourage alcohol consumption. Lichtervelde did respond positively to the organisation’s question.
Loser drinks
Beerpong is a combination of sport and drinking beer. The rules are simple. Each team has six cups half filled with beer. If the team throws the ball into one of the opponents’ cups, they must drink that cup immediately. If the ping pong ball lands in all the cups on the opposite side and all the beer is gone, the participants who had to drink the most lose.
The teams come from different corners of the country to tell their friends that they have become Belgian champions of ‘Beerpong’. They also come for fun and friendship. “If you can’t drink well, you can’t throw well,” says one of those present.
Lichterveld’s alderman of festivities looks on approvingly. “There is indeed beer involved, but the glasses are not completely full,” says Steven Bogaert. “If people go to a festival otherwise, they also drink a pint.”
