3rd league: Ulm is not naked – clear victory against Lübeck

As of: 09/02/2023 4:41 p.m

SSV Ulm 1846 beats VfB Lübeck 3-0 (0-0) in the promotion duel. The brilliant Dennis Chessa redeems the superior Ulmer after a long goal drought.

A climber duel at eye level, you would have expected that in advance. Ulm and VfB Lübeck got off to a decent start in the league. After the first four match days, the Lübeckers were still undefeated. Also the Ulmer had five points and 10th place in the table, two places behind Lübeck, a solid result. What should be shown once again: The Ulmer live from their home field advantage. They only lost one of the last 28 games at home in the Donaustadion.

Chances plus the Ulmer at the break without a reward

Ulm could have taken the lead early on. After a foul on Philipp Maier, referee Jarno Wienefeld decided on a penalty. Johannes Reichert had the opening goal on his foot (6th minute), but the Lübeck keeper Philipp Klewin, who was in a good mood, parried his shot from the point impressively.

In the 32nd minute, Ulm created the most dangerous chance up to that point: After chaos in the Lübeck penalty area, goalkeeper Klewing was already outplayed and offensive man Romario Rösch scored. But at the last moment Lübeck’s Morten Rüdiger was able to prevent the deficit.

Although the guests were the stronger team on the field in the first half, the Ulm team created the significantly better chances: a penalty and two dangerous shots from close range, while there was no shot on goal from Lübeck’s side. The Ulmer were deep and compact.

Lübeck turns on in the second half

In the second half, Lübeck started surprisingly dangerous. Coach Lukas Pfeiffer seemed to have given his team new offensive impetus during the break. Gözüsirin shot sharply on goal from 25 meters. Ulm’s keeper Ortag had to use his entire 1.91 meter body length to steer the ball to the corner. Both keepers were in outstanding form in this game and the reason for the goalless game to date.

Chessa brakes quick-tempered Lübecker

The score was obviously a thorn in the side of Léo Scienza from Ulm. With chances to score every minute (47th | 56th | 69th), the 24-year-old Brazilian showed Lübeck that he meant business. Ulm’s overdue opening goal came from substitute Dennis Chessa. After winning the ball in midfield, Chessa picked up speed, created a clear field of fire with a hook in the middle and converted ice-coldly into the lower left corner (69th).

A few minutes later, Scienza was rewarded for his efforts: the Ulm energy bundle dribbled into the penalty area from the left, left two opponents standing and snipped the ball into the right corner on the left. An absolute dream goal for Ulm. The goals had more than inspired Ulm. Lübeck succeeded from this point in time nothing more. On the contrary: in the fifth minute of added time, Ulm’s newcomer Higl put the ball across to Chessa, who scored the final 3-0 in a cool and relaxed manner.

With this win, the Ulm team pass the Lübeckers in the table and go into the next game at SV Waldhof Mannheim (September 17) with a good tailwind.
