Holstein Kiel temporarily tops the table after beating Paderborn 2-1

Holstein Kiel is at the top of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga at least until Sunday. Coach Marcel Rapp’s team won their home game against SC Paderborn 2-1 (1-1) on Saturday. The goals in front of 11,454 spectators in the Holstein Stadium were scored by Robert Leipertz (12th) for Paderborn and Tom Rothe (31st) and Steven Skrzybski (61st) for Kiel.

Holstein had their first big chance with a powerful shot by the Japanese Shuto Machino (6th), but it was the visitors who scored the opening goal. Leipertz headed the ball unchallenged in the Kiel penalty area and scored to make it 1-0. When Rothe equalized, Kiel benefited from a deflected cross, which the 18-year-old defender used to score his first goal in the second division.

Skrzybski ensured the lead for the “Storks”, surprising Paderborn goalkeeper Jannik Huth with a shot from just behind the halfway line. With the guests, Max Kruse made his third appearance of the season in the 68th minute. However, the former international could not turn the game around. Kiel was lucky when in the final phase a shot from the post by Paderborn’s Sirlord Conteh ran along the goal line but didn’t cross it (90′ + 3′).

Schalke gives up victory in Wiesbaden in injury time

Relegated FC Schalke 04 is still not in step. The Royal Blues lost a win at newly promoted SV Wehen Wiesbaden shortly before the end on Saturday and had to settle for a 1-1 (0-0) draw. With four points, coach Thomas Reis’ team is still stuck in the lower middle of the table. The Hessians are sixth with eight points for the time being.

In front of 11,003 spectators, Tobias Mohr gave the guests the lead in the 54th minute, which Max Reinthaler (90+5) equalized with a pinball goal in injury time. Schalke’s Henning Matriciani, who had just come on as a substitute, shot the ball to the goal scorer’s shin when trying to clear the ball, from where the ball bounced into the net.

In the absence of goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann, who was dropped from the squad the day before, Schalke dominated the game from the start in the style of a home team. The guests had significantly more possession of the ball, but despite their superiority against the concentrated hosts, they only posed little goal threat in the first half.

A similar picture emerged after the change. This time Schalke used the first opportunity through Mohr, who scored from a few meters after a pass from Derry Murkin. After that, the guests failed to finally decide the game and were punished late.
