After an unbelievably long period of suffering, Mateu Morey has taken the next important step on the way back to a comeback for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga. In the 1-1 draw at VfL Bochum on Saturday, the defender was back in the BVB squad for the first time in 847 days.

On May 1, 2021, Morey was on the pitch for the last time in a competitive game for Borussia Dortmund, injuring his knee badly in the DFB Cup semi-final against Holstein Kiel (5-0).

After the extremely long downtime, which was accompanied by several complications and setbacks, he was allowed to take a seat on the substitutes’ bench for the Black and Yellows in the small Revierderby in Bochum. Although it wasn’t enough for minutes, the 23-year-old was still very satisfied after the game.

“I’m very happy that I was in the squad in Bochum. It was a great feeling for me after two years and four months. I’ve worked a lot and I’m finally back,” said the Mallorquin to BVB club media.

Morey has a contract with BVB until the end of the season

To date, the right-back has played 18 Bundesliga games for Borussia Dortmund in his young professional career, the last of which was in April 2021. Morey hopes that the next appearances will finally be added in the near future: “I feel better every day. After the I need training and minutes to play for a long time. I feel very good in training and I am there for the team and my colleagues.”

According to Morey, he really enjoyed warming up with his teammates in front of his own fans and then being able to sit on the substitutes’ bench.

In the coming weeks and months, the recovered Morey will also fight for a new working paper at BVB. His current contract expires in summer 2024.
