2nd league: Hertha BSC manages 1st win of the season against SpVgg Greuther Fürth

Rostock takes first place

Led by new captain Toni Leistner, Hertha BSC celebrated their first win of the season in the 2nd Bundesliga. The Berliners won 5-0 (2-0) against SpVgg Greuther Fürth on Saturday and gave up the last place in the table to newly promoted SV Elversberg with their well-deserved home win on the fourth day. Haris Tabakovic (23rd/77th minute), Marten Winkler (31st), Palkó Dárdai (46th) and Smail Prevljak (66th) scored the goals for coach Pál Dárdai’s team. 35,291 spectators in the Olympic Stadium saw Hertha’s biggest home win since the 4-0 win over Union Berlin in May 2020. Fürth’s coach Alexander Zorniger saw the yellow-red card (56th).

A blunder by Fürth’s goalkeeper Jonas Urbig led to Berlin’s first goal of the season. After a sharply played back pass, the 20-year-old took the ball badly and shot the rushing Tabakovic while trying to clear – from there the ball bounced into the goal. The 1-0 was deserved and overdue, Winkler increased to 2-0 shortly afterwards.

Just a few seconds had passed after the break when Palkó Dárdai made it 3-0. Fürth, who rushed forward when they kicked off, had completely neglected their defense, which is why Dárdai was able to finish effortlessly. From the 56th minute, Zorniger had to follow the generally weak performance of the Fürth team from the stands after referee Tobias Stieler showed him yellow-red for complaining.

Promoted SV Elversberg had no chance against Fortuna Düsseldorf

Fortuna Düsseldorf is back on the road to success. Felix Klaus (11th minute), Jordy de Wijs (14th), Vincent Vermeij (42nd) and double goal scorer Christos Tzolis were in the clear 5:0 (3:0) away win of Düsseldorf on Saturday at promoted SV Elversberg in front of 8,000 spectators (71st, penalty kick / 79th) successful for the guests. Düsseldorf moved up to fourth place in the table for the time being, Elversberg is the new tail light.

In the first second division game in the club’s history in the Ursapharm Arena on the Kaiserlinde, Elversberg had no chance. If the promoted team paid a bitter lesson in the previous season’s games, he was inferior in all respects to the fourth-placed team from the previous season. Dusseldorf acted concentrated, safe on the ball, stood compact and caused danger from all parts of the team. The early double strike by Klaus and de Wijs knocked out the home side. The counterattack to Düsseldorf’s 3-0 made the preliminary decision. Like their supporters, the Elversberger players and the coaching team were at a loss after the lesson.

Even after the restart little changed in the dominance of Fortuna, which, however, had shifted down a gear. As a result, the Saarlanders came into play better without having any effect. Substitute Tzolis made the class difference clear with his goals.

Hansa Rostock jumps to first place: home win against VfL Osnabrück

Hansa Rostock has jumped to first place in the second division for the time being. The Mecklenburg team won their home game against newly promoted VfL Osnabrück 2-1 (1-1). Juan José Perea (27th minute) and Kai Pröger from the penalty spot (67th) scored for Hansa, Dave Gnaase (45th + 3) provided the equalizer in front of the 25,500 spectators in the Ostseestadion. Rostock’s coach Alois Schwartz had called Perea, who had been loaned out from VfB Stuttgart, into the starting XI for the first time. Gnaase, Kwasi Wriedt and Christian Conteh had joined the team for the hosts.

The Lower Saxony started very bravely, put the hosts under pressure early on and initially ensured a balanced game. But then Perea coldly converted a long ball from Dennis Dressel to his third goal of the season and Rostock’s lead. VfL stayed tuned and rewarded themselves with an equalizer in injury time in the first half. Rostock’s Janik Bachmann deflected Gnaase’s powerful shot.

A handball by Maxwell Gyamfi from Osnabrück gave the Mecklenburgers a legitimate penalty. VfL keeper Lennart Grill directed the ball to the post. From there the ball bounced back to Pröger, who used his second chance. Osnabrück tried everything but couldn’t equalize.
