Sporting director Jan Lammers: “We have already seen some spectacle”

Former F1 driver and current sporting director of the Dutch Grand Prix Jan Lammers enjoys the crowds at Circuit Zandvoort to the fullest. He is disappointed by the failure of Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo.

“Yesterday we came out with a fright in terms of weather,” says Lammers. “We have seen everything, also sporting. What a spectacle too. That hit with Piastri and Ricciardo was also new to us.”

Ricciardo broke a metacarpal bone in his left hand in the second free practice. He will no longer be in action this weekend, much to the chagrin of Lammers. “Unfortunately that is part of it, but it is a pity. Daniel is a very popular appearance, as a former teammate of Max, of course also here in the Netherlands.”

Lawson instead of Ricciardo

Ricciardo’s replacement is Liam Lawson. Lammers: “That is very interesting. Lawson is seen as a great talent. That he is a surprising new appearance, that is nice for lack of better.”

“I saw drops as big as bitterballen coming down”

Today and tomorrow it will be colder and wetter at Zandvoort than yesterday. Jan Lammers: “This morning I saw the drops come down as big as bitterballen. But if you are really among the audience, it often seems that it is worse for someone else than for yourself. track. Let’s hope it’s the same on the way back.”

Hotline for harassment

Last year, the organization of the Dutch Grand Prix received many complaints about intimidation of female visitors. Intoxicated men often made sexually suggestive remarks. That is why this year there is a special reporting point and extra stewards who call the public to order if necessary.

“The hotline is there for people who experience inappropriate behavior. Those complaints are assessed and passed on to the police. That cooperation is going well. It is confidential, so we do not release figures. But yesterday it went fairly quietly.”
