Despite the surgery taking longer than planned – more than 17 hours – the doctors say everything went well. The new uterus works normally. There were eight surgeons in two teams working simultaneously in adjacent operating rooms.
The transplant is a huge breakthrough for thousands of women in England.
The sister who received the uterus has told doctors she wants “as many children as possible.” According to one of the surgeons, this shouldn’t be a problem, she should have more than an 80 percent chance of a successful pregnancy. The woman does have ovaries despite not having a uterus.
Although this is a first in England, it is not new worldwide. In 2014, a woman in Sweden became the first person to give birth after a uterus transplant. Since then, there have been about 100 transplants in women worldwide, resulting in about 50 healthy babies being born.
