Artists who release a new record are always eager for any possibility of media attention, but in the case of Jan Smit it’s a bit different. He has recorded a new album with Engelbewaarder singer Marco Schuitmaker and with that they aroused the attention of Shownieuws. Marco did speak to them, but Jan does not want to.

Jan Smit boycott

It leads to annoyance among the makers of that program. Presenter Dyantha Brooks after the interview with Marco: “They think they have a hit and I think they could be right, right?”

Music expert Ronald Molendijk at the desk: “I have no idea, but I really don’t want to talk about this at all. Jan Smit really always refuses to speak to us, so I really have no idea why we are going to talk about this.”

Dyantha: “You want a Jan Smit boycott?”

“L*lstory!”

Private boss Evert Santegoeds has been lashing out at Jan for a while now. “But Marco Schuitmaker is nice,” he now remarks.

Ronald: “A nice guy and also very nice that he does that, but do the next record without Jan, I would say.”

Evert: “I think Jan’s management… That also comes with a l * l story. According to them, he was about to re-release the song, when he meets Marco Schuitmaker and he says: ‘Isn’t it a nice idea to do that together?’ Well, everything suddenly fell into place with Jan Smit! And you believe it?”

Radio only?

Dyantha: “I did see him on the radio. Does he only do radio promotion?”

Ronald: “Then you should be at some station that only plays Dutch music, because at 538 and those kinds of stations, this type of music is actually very little discussed. I just find it really strange. I personally think that we should not pay attention to this.”

He continues: “I think that singer is a very nice guy, but I just don’t feel the need to talk about Jan Smit if Jan Smit doesn’t want to talk to other media either.”

Career dip

Evert finds Jan’s behavior remarkable, because he is in a career slump. “His career is not going that well, because his songs are streamed four to six thousand times. His last album was called Above Jan, but that is not above Jan at all.”

He concludes: “They have completely lost track there in Volendam and that is a pity, because Jan was one of our most successful artists, but apart from that party on the square, he does not mobilize so many people anymore.”
