Generally

It has already begun to rain heavily in the stadium in the south of Budapest. Let’s let Petrus open his floodgates, because the next (and first) item on the agenda is the men’s shot put qualification from 10:30 a.m. Let’s hope it will be dry again by then.

08:47

20 km walk (M)

Due to a warning of severe storms in Budapest, the walking competition in the city center around Heroes’ Square has been pushed back two hours from 8.50 a.m. to 10.50 a.m.

20 km walk (M)

For the only German starter Christopher Linke, after many strong results in the orbit of medals at the European Championships in Munich with silver, it finally worked out with the long-awaited precious metal at an international event. The 34-year-old in Budapest may now be able to do an encore after this liberation.

08:42

20 km walk (M)

The first decision will not be made in the stadium, but on the streets of the Hungarian capital. At the last two World Championships, Toshikazu Yamanishi from Japan was on top of the podium in the 20 km walk. In the course of the season so far, the 26-year-old has not seen too much. Also among the favorites over this distance are World Championship and Olympic silver medalist Koki Ikeda from Japan, Chinese year’s fastest Zhang Jun and Italian Olympic champion Massimo Stano, who, like many other athletes, would also like to start over the 35 km.

Generally

What’s new? The program is streamlined, there are only nine days of competition on the program – instead of ten. That should make for more action. In addition, there are minor changes to the format, so the athletes in the middle distances can no longer qualify for the next round based on the time, only the placement in the respective run counts. In addition, no lanes should remain free, so there are now substitute places for finals if an athlete who is actually qualified should fail at short notice due to an injury (“hot-seat system”). Sprinters are also allowed to run under protest after a controversial false start before a final decision about the possible false start is made after a detailed analysis.

Generally

Unlike other sports, the world athletics governing body World Athletics (WA) remains firm and continues to ban all athletes, coaches and officials from Russia and Belarus over the attack on Ukraine. Even “neutral athletes” are not allowed to start at the World Championships. WA President Sebastian Coe is opposed to the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to allow Russians and Belarusians to take part in international competitions again under certain conditions. This should be the case again at the earliest at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

08:29

Generally

In the run-up to the home EM party in Munich with 16 times precious metal, only Mihambo (gold) and the women’s sprint relay around Gina Lückenkemper (bronze) had won medals in Eugene – it was the worst World Cup record in German athletics history . Let’s hope that things will get better again in Hungary. The highest hopes of the German team only start at the end of the competitions: the two decathletes Leo Neugebauer and Niklas Kaul as well as Julian Weber in the javelin throw.

08:25

Generally

The injury pitch in the German camp is almost unprecedented. The DLV lacks numerous top performers in the Hungarian capital. In addition to Mihambo, European champion Konstanze Klosterhalfen (5000 m) and European silver medal winners Lea Meyer (obstacle) and Bo Kanda Lita Baehre (pole vault) also canceled their participation due to injuries.

08:20

Generally

Very bitter from a German point of view: Because long jump Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo injured herself, the German team is missing the biggest figurehead. In addition, world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone from the USA, an international top star, is injured. A new Usain Bolt is still not in sight, but exceptional talents such as pole vault high-flyer Armand “Mondo” Duplantis (Sweden), hurdle ace Karsten Warholm (Norway) or sprinter Noah Lyles (USA) are rushing into the limelight.

08:16

Generally

40 years after the first event in Helsinki, the 19th world championships for track and field athletes are now taking place – in the beautiful Nemzeti Atletikai Központ stadium in Budapest, directly on the Danube. In the next nine days, gold, silver and bronze will be at stake 49 times (24 disciplines each for men and women, plus the mixed relay over 4×400 m). Because the World Championships in Eugene had been postponed last year due to the corona pandemic, title fights are now on the agenda again.
