The U19 provide a stunt at the Volley World Cup in Argentina, with a West Flemish trainer
The Young Red Dragons finished sixth at the World Cup in Argentina. A very impressive performance by the team, led by coach Mieke Moyaert from Zwevezele. She still enjoys this unique World Cup at home.
“First of all, it is not that easy to qualify for a world championship. So that is already an achievement in itself. Then you actually play against the 20 best countries in the world, where a sixth place is quite unique for a Belgian team. equals the best ever performance by a U19 team at a World Cup. Quite a great performance we put in.”
Stunt
Especially the victory against volleyball superpower Brazil came unexpected. “That was actually a stunt. We also fell 2-0 and then won 2-3. We had hoped for a stunt, either against Italy or against Brazil. We hadn’t factored it in but you go of course I do.”
A strong performance from this class that is now growing into the junior category. Mieke has been in the circuit as a national volleyball coach for years. Does she dream of becoming the head coach of the Red Dragons one day? “What I do now, I really like to do and I also try to be the best at it. I also think that is a great ambition. Working with the young people in the top sports school and also working with the selection. Trying to achieve the best possible performance and let the players gain experience. But I certainly won’t say no. If there ever comes a good offer, I will certainly think about it.”
