Tear exchange from Reyna: “He’s pretty much done!”

Borussia Dortmund clearly won 6-0 against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Sunday evening and showed the much-needed reaction after the 2-4 home defeat against Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday. Despite the overwhelming victory, BVB also had two bitter personal details to digest: Giovanni Reyna and Dan-Axel Zagadou are threatened with the next injury break.

Both Dortmund players, who were only in BVB’s starting XI for the fourth and fifth time this season, had to be replaced due to injuries before the break.

It was particularly bitter for Gio Reyna, as the 19-year-old left the pitch at Signal Iduna Park in tears in the 30th minute. He fell to the ground on the field beforehand, and practically all BVB teammates then rushed to the American to help him up. He was replaced by Julian Brandt in the 30th minute.

According to BVB head coach Marco Rose, who commented on the two forced substitutions after the game, Reyna was “pretty ready”.

“He just came out of an injury, just got back,” Rose recalled of the youngster’s long period of suffering. The offensive all-rounder had missed more than 25 BVB competitive games due to a muscle injury and was absent continuously between September and January.

Borussia Dortmund initially gave no information about the exact nature and severity of the injury suffered on Sunday. Marco Rose only said: “You have to reckon with the fact that your old position has broken up again. It’s mega bitter.”

But Dortmund’s head coach promised: “We’ll get him back and give him all the support.”

Central defender Dan-Axel Zagadou also had to be substituted before the half-time break due to muscular problems. The injury shouldn’t be that bad for the French defender. He was replaced by Marin Pongracic on Sunday night.
