On the night from Saturday to Sunday, a four-story apartment building collapsed and landed on top of another one-story building.
The search for survivors began on Sunday. At least 16 people were killed and five seriously injured. Among the dead are also a 3-year-old girl and a 19-year-old woman. “The situation is under control and the fire brigade is working to ensure that no one remains under the rubble,” the governor of the Littoral region assured.
It is not yet clear why the building collapsed. It is not the first time that this has happened in Douala. In 2016, five people died in the collapse of a residential building in the city. In June of the same year, authorities identified 500 buildings in the city at risk of collapse.
