We Berliners have it good – we live in the greenest capital of Europe. After Friedrichshain and Humboldthain, Treptower Park was the third major project by Lenné’s student and Berlin’s first municipal garden director, Gustav Meyer (1816–77).

In the middle is the Zenner. As early as 1822, Berliners refreshed themselves with beer and lemonade at the restaurant, with a view of the Spree and the Insel der Jugend. And since everything stays the same, just different, we too want to strengthen ourselves after the sun and a walk 101 years later in the Zenner.

However, we order an Aperol Spritz (7.50 euros) and French fries. My friend takes the variant with fried oyster mushrooms and I with truffle and parmesan (each 7.90 euros). This is called “Loaded Fries” in modern German – and it tastes incredibly good.

But there are also dishes such as cheese spaetzle and organic bratwurst – and of course beer on tap. It’s self-service and despite the rush, everything goes very quickly.

The beer garden is clean and tidy, the tables are cleared continuously, so we don’t have to fear any bee or wasp attacks. Even the toilets are plentiful and clean.

How does the Berliner say? Can’t complain!
