Steven Skrzybski does not regret leaving 1. FC Union Berlin in the summer of 2018.
Even if the path of the Irons always led upwards and the club, to which Skrzybski switched when he was seven, will compete in the Champions League for the first time next season.
“Not because I want to consciously hide this thought, but because I wanted to take a chance at the time,” said the attacker from the second division soccer team Holstein Kiel in an interview with the “Berliner Zeitung” before meeting his former club again this Saturday for the friendly at the An der Alten Försterei stadium.
At that time, Skrzybski had switched to FC Schalke 04. “You mustn’t forget, even though it’s hard to imagine today and the clubs have developed in opposite directions, that Union played in the 2nd Bundesliga and Schalke in the Champions League,” he explained.
“For me, a childhood dream came true with the move, because Schalke was always in my heart. And who knows, maybe Union wouldn’t have gotten promoted with me.” The return to the stadium in Berlin-Köpenick remains something special for him. “I still love the club. I love the fans and the employees.” The contact was never broken off.
