FC Bayern has found a new sporting director. As the club announced on Tuesday afternoon, Red Bull Salzburg’s Christoph Freund will switch to the German record champions on September 1st and at the end of the transfer phase. Previously, among others,sky” and “Picture“ reported on the approaching reinforcement for the sporting management of Munich.
Freund has held the same position at the “Red Bulls” since 2015 and, as a look at the TM database shows, only two clubs worldwide have achieved a better transfer balance than the Austrian series champions during this period. At Salzburg there is an increase of almost 400 million euros, including the sale of Dominik Szoboszlai, Karim Adeyemi and Naby Keïta to the Bundesliga, which resulted in high income. Freund replaced Ralf Rangnick eight years ago, before that he was team manager from 2006 and sports coordinator from 2012. His RB contract would have been valid until 2026. A year ago he was also courted by Chelsea FC.

FC Bayern’s search for a sports director: Eberl & Krösche were also an issue
The position of Munich head of sport had been vacant since the split with Hasan Salihamidzic immediately after the final whistle of the 34th Bundesliga matchday last season. Salihamidzic was sports director from 2017 to 2020, after which he was promoted to sports director. Currently and until the end of the transfer phase, coach Thomas Tuchel, supervisory board Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, honorary president Uli Hoeneß, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, finance boss Michael Diederich, technical director Marco Neppe and president Herbert Hainer form a replacement task force.
In the search for a sports director, the names Max Eberl (Leipzig) and Markus Krösche (Frankfurt) have been traded in recent months. At the beginning of June, Hainer said with regard to a new official: “It has to be someone we are fully convinced of and who can achieve our ambitious goals. Of course we’d like to have it as soon as possible, but if it takes a few months or until Christmas, it doesn’t bother us. We can bridge the situation well.”
