Expenditure breaks the 100 million mark
As expected, Arsenal have signed Jurrien Timber from Ajax Amsterdam. The 22-year-old central defender signed a long-term contract, the Gunners announced on Friday. With the second new signing after Kai Havertz (24; for 70 million euros from Chelsea), the Londoners have already cracked the 100 million euro mark in terms of spending.

The Dutch record champions confirmed the transfer fee of 40 million euros. The sum can also increase to up to 45 million euros through bonuses. Only five players have left Ajax for a higher fee, while Timber is the twelfth most expensive signing for Arsenal, just behind Shkodran Mustafi (€41m).
Timber, Mustafi, Leno & Co.: Arsenal’s most expensive additions
Timber had announced his desire to change a long time ago. Last year, a deal with Manchester United failed, the Ajax homegrown also rejected because of the World Cup chances. The Dutch international made 121 appearances (six goals) for the Amsterdam pros, 47 of them last season.
“We are very pleased that Jurrien has come to us. He’s a versatile young defender who fits into our system and will bring a lot of extra quality to our squad,” said coach Mikel Arteta. “Jurrien is a young player who has already achieved so much. He’s experienced more than once what it’s like to take part in a major international tournament and he’s already won a number of trophies with Ajax. We look forward to welcoming and integrating Jurrien into the team.”
