After a largely disappointing pre-season in FC Bayern, Dayot Upamecano was considered a shaky candidate at times. Although the rumors about a premature departure of the central defender from Munich never became concrete, his sporting status seemed to have fallen. Now the record champion is said to have made a fundamental decision with the French.
After all, FC Bayern spent almost 43 million euros in the summer of 2021 to free Dayot Upamecano from Leipzig. The defender was considered the dream player of the then coach Julian Nagelsmann, both had previously worked together successfully at RB.
Nagelsmann on Säbener Straße is history now, Thomas Tuchel took over from the hapless trainer in the spring.
At the same time, Upamecano’s status as a regular player faltered more and more, his performances were too flawed, especially in the first months after the turn of the year. Sad low points were his totally confused performances in the two Champions League quarter-finals against Manchester City.
FC Bayern does not want to give Upamecano
In the past few weeks and months, there has therefore been repeated speculation about a possible premature farewell to the national player, who is still tied until 2026, after all FC Bayern needs fresh money for its squad restructuring.
“Bild” football boss Christian Falk and reporter colleague Tobias Altschäffl revealed in the latest edition of the podcast “Bayern Insider” that Upamecano is not for sale this summer. Although the 24-year-old recently changed his advisor, this is not an indication of a potential farewell.
According to reports, the defensive specialist could still be threatened with the role of backup, alongside the seeded Matthijs de Ligt, the designated new signing Min-jae Kim is the most likely partner in the center. Despite all this, FC Bayern definitely want to keep Upamecano.
