THEThe calculation was made a few years ago but it remains evidently valid: if you drive at a speed of 50 kilometers per hour and look at your cell phone for two seconds, it is as if you traveled 28 meters blindfolded.
This figure is enough to understand what consequences making calls or even – as often happens now – surfing the internet on smartphones while traveling on roads or motorways can have.
Very high risks confirmed by data on road accidents this year which compared to the first six months of 2022 show a surge especially as regards the number of victims and that of injured.
According to the estimates of theasapsthe association that monitors road safety conditions on the national territory, there were 228 deaths even if, the experts explain, “the figures are always rounded down because they do not consider the seriously injured who die in hospitals after hospitalization”.
There are those who look at their mobile phones, but there are also those who drive after drinking alcohol or taking drugs. It is the investigations launched throughout Italy for road homicide that demonstrate how frequent it is – especially among young people – to stay in a car or motorbike even though it is not in good condition.
The bill approved by the government two weeks ago provides that “in case of positivity to drugs or alcohol, regardless of the state of alteration, the suspension and the revocation of the license with prohibition to obtain it for up to three years».
Speed cameras, speed bumps to slow down the speed of cars and motorcycles, police surveillance on the roads can serve as a deterrent, but only the awareness of the danger can make the difference.
This is why the awareness campaign planned by the traffic police provides for a traveling classroom throughout the summer in the main seaside resorts.
A driving simulator will be set up with «intoxication paths and other interactive activities that will allow experience firsthand what it means to drive in psychophysical conditions altered by the use of drugs and alcohol». It is important to try, to persuade young people to do it. It helps to stop the massacre.
