Johan Vlemmix has founded a new political party. His latest political ambition is called Protection of the Population. He is now registered with the electoral council and wants to participate in the House of Representatives and European elections. And he would rather do that sooner rather than later. “As far as we are concerned, the cabinet can fall. We are ready,” says the entrepreneur and politician from Hoeven.
The original Population Protection organization was founded in 1952 to protect civilians in times of nuclear war. The organization consisted of volunteers who regularly held exercises. Each municipality had its own department. In 1986 the curtain finally fell for the Protection of the Population.
The timing of the launch of the batch of the same name seems no coincidence. For several months now, Vlemmix has been fanatically setting up a nuclear training center including bomb shelters on the site of the former observatory in Hoeven. Still, according to the upcoming politician, his party is not an ordinary media stunt. With Protection of the Population, he wants to get the debate on information and security ‘seriously’ on the political agenda.
“Security must be ‘seriously’ back on the political agenda.”
“I don’t want to scare people, but I want them to be prepared and know what to do when disaster strikes. They have to work together more for this and a modern version of the Protection of the Population has to come back,” explains Vlemmix when we ask what the party stands for.
He lashes out at the current cabinet: “If you see what Putin is doing now, then the subject of ‘protection’ is the talk of the day. They know that very well in The Hague, but they all stick their heads in the sand. “
Vlemmix does not care about the question of whether voters are waiting for yet another one-issue party. In addition, his party says it also has an eye for other subjects. “The party is neither left nor right. We are there where we are needed by the people,” said the politician.
“It can’t go on like this any longer.”
For example, with regard to the asylum and nitrogen crisis, his party is decidedly right-wing. Vlemmix: “It is no longer possible with the influx of asylum seekers. We can no longer handle these kinds of numbers in the Netherlands.” And about the other hot theme ‘nitrogen’: “We have to stop being the best boy in the class. We really need the farmers.”
Vlemmix previously made a shot at the plush in The Hague with the Feestfeest and the Party of the Future. Both initiatives ended in a debacle. “I think people didn’t take us seriously back then. Hopefully that will change now. For that, they only have to look at the developments in the world around them,” says de Hoevenaar.
“I aim for at least one seat in the House of Representatives.”
Protection Population has one ‘b’ less than Caroline van der Plas’s Boer Citizen Movement. According to Vlemmix, it is therefore emphatically not the intention to abbreviate his party name to BB. “We refer to ourselves by full name to avoid confusion.”
It is not yet known who will be eligible for the party next to Johan Vlemmix. Vlemmix is still working on a list of names. “I am aiming at least for a seat in the House of Representatives. We can already exert a lot of influence with this.”
