Deputy Stelpstra: “When the Senate voted down the ban on asbestos roofs in 2019, our fears became reality. The number of roof remediation fell sharply. And that is not good. Because the older an asbestos roof gets, the more difficult and expensive the remediation. But what surprised us is the stabilization of the numbers from 2020, when it had become a voluntary restructuring.”
The remediation is now increasing in absolute numbers because owners of relatively smaller asbestos roofs are getting started. Due to this trend, it may again happen that the remediated square meters decrease, while the number of remediations actually increases, the Provincial Executive wrote to the provincial council.
The graph below shows that the removal of the ban in the Senate caused a free fall in the number of asbestos roofs that were cleaned up. But also that the remediation did not stop (source: province of Drenthe).
