In a video posted to YouTube on December 29, 2021, Hyundai shows how its engineers have reused parts of the Ioniq 5 to make an air purifier.
Hyundai turns test vehicle into an air purifier
Each vehicle is the result of a long development process during which many prototypes are manufactured and never hit the road. Test vehicles, which make it possible to develop the final model. Car manufacturers must ask the question of their recycling.

What will happen to the dozens of prototypes made for testing before a final version is shut down? Although it is difficult to answer this question precisely at the moment, the recycling of parts and batteries is obviously on the agenda.
To avoid destroying one more prototype, Hyundai engineers decided that they were going to transform it. It is from this idea that the “Ioniq 5 Rebirth”, an air purifier made with recycled parts from the vehicle. To achieve this, engineers used parts from a test vehicle from Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 model, as you can see in the video released by the automaker.
A new way to recycle smarter?
We discover how Korean engineers boned the vehicle to transform it. They made use of the cooling fan, the door panels, the LED tail lights, the Ioniq 5 logo and of course the filtration system. A 20 inch alloy wheel has been placed on the top of the air purifier, which means it is certainly very tall.
If the batteries of electric vehicles are already recyclable, this new experience is interesting. She could pave the way for a new form of recycling, more comprehensive and smarter. It’s a great way to revive a car that’s no longer needed. The transformation into an air purifier is not trivial. It is a subject dear to Hyundai. Indeed, the South Korean manufacturer claims that the Nexo, an SUV equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell, is able to purify the air while driving.
