The sun is shining outside, but the Meilandjes are in heavy weather. Now that it’s raining low records, they will undoubtedly wonder whether their ‘yes’ to an extra long season was wise…
Finding the right balance between maximizing success and preventing overkill is a challenging task for many well-known Dutch people. The Meilandjes have successfully exploited their popularity, but the risk of saturation is currently greater than ever and they can only see it themselves.
Elevator down
Earlier this year, the Meilandjes agreed to an extra long season – according to Maxime Meiland, that provides a nice bonus, but was that wise in retrospect? Chateau Meiland was ready for episode seventeen (!) the day before yesterday and there are still two to go.
The current season of the Meilandjes lasts even longer than the average holiday of Eva Jinek and that is saying something. RTL Boulevard recently sounded the alarm, but the warning that has the most impact is of course that of Stichting KijkOnderzoek. This clearly shows that the TV family is in the elevator down.
Meiland break
Erica and Martien Meiland must realize that there may come a point when the public has seen and heard enough, but can they make it towards their daughter Maxime to put an end to it (for the time being)? She has an extremely high mortgage and wants a larger share of the loot. Let alone that she wants or can stop…
Still, viewing figures connoisseur Joost Maiburg fears the worst. He writes: “The seventeenth episode drew a season low record just like last week. Even delayed it did not exceed the million mark. It is therefore an endless and monotonous growing season. Hopefully SBS6 will be careful with the Meilandjes and they will plan a Meiland break this fall.”
Fewer and fewer people
Joost, who works for RTL Boulevard, shows very clearly with a graph how things are going with the Meilandjes. “On average, the eighth season of Chateau Meiland has attracted 823,000 viewers (excluding delayed viewing) so far,” he reports.
He continues: “Not bad numbers, but fewer and fewer people are watching during this season. And that’s not just because of the nicer weather. Only the first season scored lower on average.”
What does superview figure connoisseur think. Tina Nijkamp of it? She states that Chateau Meiland has simply become too boring: “The magic of the family disappears very quickly for the viewer in this way. Shame. Time for a format for the family I think instead of a reality soap.”
