Novak Djokovic is the French Open champion. He froze Casper Ruudin in Sunday’s final in straight sets.

The Grand Slam victory is already the 23rd in Djokovic’s gallant career. He moved to the front of the men’s victory statistics Rafael Nadalthe king of Roland Garros, who had to miss this year’s tournament due to injury.

On the women’s side, number one on the list with 24 Grand Slam wins Margaret Court13 of whose championships came before the open era. With Serena Williams has 23 GS singles titles like Djokovic.

– I couldn’t be more proud and grateful that I managed to win at Roland Garros, Djokovic said in his court speech.

– This has always been the hardest for me to win out of the four Slams.

Djokovic has made it to the final seven times in France. The fresh championship is the third.

– My mass season did not go too well. People and myself had a lot of doubts, but I tried to press on with my team with the mind that the fitness spike will hit the Grand Slam.

Long opening set

Ruud made a strong start, broke Djokovic’s first serve and raced to a 4–1 lead. Djokovic squirmed, of course, and finally took the set win with a blunt 7–1-with a tiebreak.

The opening set lasted no less than 82 minutes – and froze Ruud, at least mentally. Djokovic hit the gas and took the second set 6–3.

Ruud did not give up a fight. He led the third set 5–4, but in a tight spot, Djokovic increased the tempo again and took three game into the pipe.

– There was a lot of pressure and a lot of emotion in the game, Djokovic commented.

– I tried to stay in the moment, follow the tactics and focus on the next point. It worked very well.

Ruud’s third final

Norway still didn’t get its first men’s Grand Slam winner. Norwegian-born on the women’s side Molla Mallory won the US Open no less than eight times, but four of them as an American.

Ruud played the first Grand Slam finals of his career last year. He lost in France to Rafael Nadal and in the US Open For Carlos Alcaraz.

Djokovic faced Alcaraz, the tour’s number one and world number one, in the semifinals of the French Open. Alcarazi’s calf cramps, which arrived at the beginning of the third set, eventually swept Djokovic to an effortless 3–1 victory – and to the final with a lighter strain than expected.

Ruud failed in his own semi-final Alexander Zverev 3–0. He lost only three sets before the final.

– Novak, you wrote tennis history again, Ruud summarized.

– It’s hard to explain how incredible it is, how good you are and what kind of inspiration you are to many people around the world.
