Despite his manageable yield, coach Tayfun Korkut is confident of achieving the turnaround at Hertha BSC. The 47-year-old should be helped by the experience he gained at his previous stations. “All the teams that I took over were in the middle of the season and had problems,” said Korkut in an interview with “Kicker”.
Born in Stuttgart, he took over from Berlin last November and signed a contract until the end of the season. After a respectable start, there have been six games in a row without a win – and with 0.9 points per game, Korkut has the weakest point average of all Hertha coaches since Otto Rehhagel in 2012.

“The situations in Hanover, Leverkusen or Stuttgart are still not transferrable to the situation here. But basically I know what’s in store for us, what’s in demand,” said Korkut. “Pressure is my constant companion throughout my coaching career. Sometimes you have to push him away, sometimes you put him in a headlock, sometimes he calms you down.” The ex-professional has been on the touchline 87 times in the Bundesliga – he has only won 28 games (points average 1.25).
Korkut would like to stay at Hertha BSC – top candidate Schmidt
In view of the current sporting situation, it is extremely unlikely that Korkut will continue to look after the capital club beyond the summer. However, he would like to stay. “I’m very passionate about being a coach. And I have a very good and trusting relationship here with Fredi Bobic (Sports Managing Director; ed.),” said Korkut.
“Sport Bild” named Roger Schmidt as a promising candidate for the new season – the 54-year-old will leave PSV Eindhoven in a few months of his own volition. As the “BZ” Now reported, Schmidt, who was considered a favourite, could well imagine an engagement at Hertha. In the past he had coached Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.
