In the Bundesliga, an assistant referee is hit by a beer mug. Now the thrower has been sentenced.
After throwing a beer mug during a Bundesliga game, a VfL Bochum fan was convicted of assault on Monday. The Bochum district court imposed a fine of 3,200 euros (80 daily rates of 40 euros) on the man.
Game canceled – and counted for Gladbach
The court is convinced that the defendant threw the cup in the direction of the linesman in the match between VfL Bochum and Borussia Mönchengladbach on March 18, 2022. Assistant referee Christian Gittelmann was hit in the head and collapsed. The game was then stopped when the score was 0:2 in the second half and later counted for Gladbach. In addition, the DFB had imposed a €100,000 fine on Bochum.
In the trial at the Bochum District Court, the accused remained silent on the allegations. According to the verdict, after evaluating the video recordings, there is no doubt that the 39-year-old was the perpetrator. “A sign must be set,” said judge Sabine Schüler in the justification for the verdict. Referees are “not fair game” and should not be exposed to the mood swings of the spectators.
800 euros compensation to linesman Gittelmann
In addition to the fine, the accused must also pay 800 euros in damages to the injured party. The defense had requested acquittal. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
