Central Coast Australian champions again after 10 years of waiting

Cummings three pack

Central Coast Mariners celebrate their second championship in a decade, thanks to a hat-trick from international Jason Cummings in a final that will make history. In the Finals Series final, the Mariners stunned A-League regular-season champions Melbourne City FC 6-1. Central Coast was only second, nine points behind.

For Melbourne City it is the third final defeat in the past four years. In 2021, the club celebrated the only championship in its history to date. With 24 goals in 26 regular-season games, Melbourne star striker Jamie Maclaren is certainly the top scorer.

Final hero Jason Cummings, who broke the club’s record from 2012/13 (Daniel McBreen) with 20 goals this season, announced his departure a few minutes before kick-off and could hardly put into words his emotions and his thanks to the fans, the team and his coach Nick Montgomery say, “I can’t thank you enough. On the pitch, off the pitch. I’ve never experienced anything like this in my life (…) I’ve never had a coach who believed in me like that. I’m just happy that I got my revenge today, with a hat-trick in the Grand Final, and we’re going to celebrate tonight.” The 27-year-old is probably drawn to Indian top club Mohun Bagan Super Giant.

The 2023/24 A-League season starts on June 21 and will be the last season to be played with twelve teams. This will then be increased to 14 teams. Curiously, last season’s runners-up Macarthur FC will take part in the AFC Cup as cup winners, as will the Central Coast Mariners. Melbourne City secured their place in the group stage of the 2023/24 edition of the AFC Champions League as regular-season champions.
