New season, new hierarchy at Borussia Dortmund? It is possible that Marco Reus will lose the BVB captaincy next season. Four possible successors are already being discussed.
After the last-minute drama in the title duel with FC Bayern, some changes are coming at Borussia Dortmund.
BVB has already officially said goodbye to five players with expiring contracts, Raphael Guerreiro, Felix Passlack, Mahmoud Dahoud, Anthony Modeste and Luca Unbehaun. Jude Bellingham is set to join Real Madrid. Professionals like Nico Schulz or Thomas Meunier, who have long since been sorted out, are considered sales candidates.
On the other hand, the two veterans Mats Hummels and Marco Reus will continue to wear BVB jerseys. Both signed new one-year contracts until the summer of 2024, so in all likelihood they will go into their final season in black and yellow.
It is still open whether Reus will do this as before as captain and Hummels as his deputy. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the fascia passed to a younger professional to create a new hierarchy. The departure of Bellingham, who currently serves as the third captain, also necessitates changes to the team council.
BVB: Four candidates for the captaincy?
The club-affiliated “Ruhr Nachrichten” named Gregor Kobel, Nico Schlotterbeck, Niklas Süle and Sébastien Haller as candidates for a promotion in the internal power pyramid. They are all also possible captain options, it is said.
The decision as to whether Reus and/or Hummels will lose their positions before their probably last BVB season could already be made on Tuesday. Since midday, the so-called “elephant group” has been meeting in a Dortmund restaurant.
Managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke, sports director Sebastian Kehl and consultant Matthias Sammer analyze the sporting development of the last twelve months together with trainer Edin Terzic.
Among other things, transfer questions should come up and the future communication of one’s own goals should be discussed.
