49-euro ticket: Employees of some companies can look forward to a subsidy

Mobile throughout Germany at attractive conditions

On May 1, 2023, the monthly ticket valid throughout Germany, the so-called 49-euro ticket, was introduced. For a comparatively low price of 49 euros, ticket holders have the opportunity to use local and regional buses and trains throughout Germany. The new ticket should be worthwhile for many consumers, as the standard tariff for monthly tickets in many German transport associations is in some cases significantly higher than 49 euros. In Berlin, for example, 91 euros were previously due for a monthly pass at the standard tariff.

Up to 20 euros discount

In addition to the generally attractive conditions of the 49-euro ticket, some employers are offering their employees a subsidy for the new ticket, according to the results of a survey by the Rheinische Post. As the Rheinische Post reports, Bayer, among others, is subsidizing the 49-euro ticket. Employees of the group pay only 34.30 euros per month. The discount results from a subsidy from the group of 12.25 euros and a discount of five percent from public transport providers, which grant them to companies in the course of such subsidies. Employees of the public WDR and the insurer Ergo can also look forward to a discount of 15 and 20 euros, respectively, as reported by the Rheinische Post.

Other companies position themselves explicitly against a reduction

While the telecommunications company Vodafone is aiming to subsidize the 49-euro ticket and, according to a company spokesman, is already in negotiations, Telekom has decided against subsidizing the 49-euro ticket. A subsidy for the 49-euro ticket is not being considered, since the Germany ticket itself represents “a significantly more flexible and also cheaper alternative” to the previously offered job ticket, according to a Telekom spokesman.
