Presentation before the end of the season
On Monday, Werder Bremen presented Dawid Kownacki as the first new signing for the coming season. The 26-year-old center forward presented himself on the media channels of the green and whites in various photos and videos in the Werder outfit and in the Weser Stadium. An action that was not agreed with Fortuna Düsseldorf, where the Pole is currently still under contract, and was criticized accordingly.
“We wondered. It wasn’t communicated to us. We would have wished for it differently,” said F95 sports director Christian Weber to the “Picture‘ to present Kownacki before the end of the season. He did not blame the player himself. “He has behaved in an exemplary manner since it became clear that he would not renew his contract. We’re not mad at him. Considering the number of times he’s played chipped. He gave everything until the end, got involved, scored goals.” The attacker has scored twelve goals and nine assists in 31 second division games this season, making him the sixth-best scorer in the German lower house.
Opposite the “Rheinische PostA spokesman for Werder Bremen admitted that “it was all quite unfortunate”. “We certainly could have designed it better,” it said. “We’re already that self-critical. In the end, the timing was not well chosen. We are in contact with Fortuna on the subject and have clarified it.”

Kownacki first switched to Fortuna on loan from Sampdoria in 2019 and was then committed for 6.75 million euros – the Düsseldorf team has never spent more money in their club history. In the second half of last season, F95 lent the offensive power, along with Darmstadt central defender Patric Pfeiffer by far the most valuable second division player with an expiring contract, to their training club Lech Posen. Overall, Kownacki has made 101 appearances for Düsseldorf in the past four years, in which he contributed 43 goals.
