Had they won last Saturday, the championship would be up for grabs for AFC next weekend. But it was equalized against the already relegated OFC, so that the team from Amsterdam no longer has the title in their own hands. Yet the hope is still there. That’s why they make the best of it at the Goed Genoeg sports park in Oud-Zuid.

Katwijk is now first in the league and, just like AFC, has 68 points, but the Katwijkers have a much better goal difference. So they have to lose or draw if AFC wants to become champion on Saturday. And not entirely unimportant: AFC must win.

Ibiza

Katwijk will play against Spakenburg on Saturday, which sent the selection on a team outing to Ibiza this week because they did so well in the KNVB Cup tournament. The fact that they will probably party all week does not necessarily have to be an advantage for Katwijk, thinks AFC trainer Benno Nihom. “Maybe it’s good for team building, so it’s possible.”

To trust

Midfielder Splinter de Mooij also has confidence in a good outcome this Saturday. “I have high hopes that we will be fine, but we first have to win on Saturday. That is also really important,” the midfielder laughs.

Cody Claver agrees. “I am convinced that we have a fantastic team and that we can just become champions,” said the defender.

The match against Excelsior Maassluis starts this Saturday at sports park Goed Genoeg at 3.30 pm. Katwijk-Spakenburg is simultaneous.
