British blues rock guitarist Jeff Beck passed away in January 2023 at the age of 78. Soon after, colleagues of Beck’s began to set up a tribute show for him, to be held at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The first of the two concerts was played on Monday, May 22nd. Among those in attendance were Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood.
Jeff Beck had replaced Clapton as guitarist for the Yardbirds in 1965, which kick-started his career. The Londoner starred with Stewart and Wood as the Jeff Beck Group. Johnny Depp, with whom Beck released the joint album “18” in 2022, also took part in the concert. Stewart shared impressions of the evening on his Instagram channel. “Fantastic night last night for our mate Jeff, loads of great artists, friends and family in attendance! I look forward to doing it all again today,” wrote the 78-year-old.
Other participants in the tribute show were Billy Gibbons, John McLaughlin, Robert Randolph, Gary Clark Jr., Joss Stone, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, Imelda May, Olivia Safe and Doyle Bramhall. Metallica’s Kirk Hammett made a surprise appearance. Various recordings of the concert can be seen on YouTube.
