Fortuna Düsseldorf and Hannover 96 drew in a turbulent game with six goals in the 2nd Bundesliga.
In front of 35,500 fans in the arena, Cedric Teuchert (12′) and Louis Schaub (21′) gave the guests the lead, Felix Klaus with a double strike (30’/52′) and Daniel Ginczek (77′) initially turned the game in favor of the luck. Maximilian Beier (89th) equalized for Hannover.
Dusseldorf against Hanover – a real exchange of blows
Although the game was sportingly meaningless, both teams delivered a real exchange of blows. Two worthwhile attacks with a consistent finish brought the North Germans the early lead through Teuchert and Schaub.
It speaks for the morale of Düsseldorf that the false start had little effect. A double from Klaus put them back in the game. In the closing stages there were plenty of chances for more goals here and there.
When Ginczek, who had just come on as a substitute, hit the far corner with a shot from eight yards, the preliminary decision seemed to have been made in favor of Fortuna. But Beier scored the final point with his equalizer.
Fortuna says goodbye to goalscorer Rouwen Hennings
The guests emotionally said goodbye to goalscorer Rouwen Hennings after the end of all hopes of promotion, but without a win. Hennings was once again stormily celebrated when he came on as a substitute in the 74th minute. The 35-year-old, who has been at the club for seven years, is Düsseldorf’s record goalscorer in the 2nd division with 50 goals, and he scored a total of 84 goals in 228 competitive games. He will continue his career elsewhere and later take a place on the coaching staff of the youth academy. Hennings prepared the 3:2 through Ginczek.
Coach Daniel Thioune’s team failed to draw level with fourth-placed FC St. Pauli and is now sixth in the table. Hanover slipped to ninth place. Both clubs will make another attempt to return to the Bundesliga in the coming season – the Düsseldorf team with their free ticket concept “Fortuna for everyone”.
