Mid-term conclusion:
The starting position promised a lot of tension, but the game between Freiburg and Wolfsburg hasn’t really knocked anyone’s socks off so far. The SC recorded the somewhat more promising approaches over long stretches, towards the end VfL took control of the game. Clear goal chances are still scarce on both sides, the only noteworthy offensive actions were a few harmless attempts by Vincenzo Grifo. The second round can only get better.

21:15
Sebastiaan Bornauw stands his ground against Philipp Lienhart. That could have been yellow too, but Bastian Dankert left it at a warning. Hopefully not because of the similarity of the first names.
42
21:14
The wolves are picking up speed. Jakub Kamiński sprints past Philipp Lienhart on the left, but doesn’t have enough strength left for a more precise cross.
41
21:13
There is the first goal approach for VfL in this game! Patrick Wimmer is sent right into the sixteen over several stations. The Austrian puts it back in the middle, where Nicolas Höfler clears before Felix Nmecha.
39
21:10
Yellow card for Jonas Wind (VfL Wolfsburg)
The Danish attacker is cautioned for a tactical foul on Vincenzo Grifo.
38
21:10
Wolfsburg records a longer ball possession phase. But it remains the case that the Lower Saxony have been too static up to now.
36
21:07
A cross slides past the far post to Vincenzo Grifo. The Italian adjusts the ball and aims for the long corner with a flick, but clearly distorts.
35
21:06
Is that the much-cited summer football? There is still a lot at stake for both teams. The actors just seem pretty flat.
33
21:05
A good half hour is played. Fans of cultivated defensive football should enjoy this game, because there hasn’t been a clear chance to score so far.
31
21:02
Yellow card for Roland Sallai (SC Freiburg)
Now it places the first yellow box. Roland Sallai sees an impetuous boarding against Felix Nmecha.
29
21:02
It’s getting hot! Lucas Höler tugs at Maximilian Arnold’s jersey. Both then exchange a few warm words and hint at a headbutt. However, referee Bastian Dankert would do well to refrain from issuing a warning and to reconcile the brawlers.
27
20:58
If things continue like this, the opening goal for the Breisgauer is only a matter of time. Sallai actually crosses too far from the right, but Grifo gets the ball on the other side and keeps the attack alive.
24
20:56
It almost had to be 1-0! Maximilian Arnold makes a creepy construction mistake. Vincenzo Grifo sprints in between, while Sebastiaan Bornauw was actually already heading in the other direction. But the Belgian picks up the pace again and tackles Grifo at the last moment.
21
20:53
The home side continue to have the better approaches. Roland Sallai artistically takes a cross from the right at the near post, but Koen Casteels catches the arc lamp confidently.
20
20:51
The 20-minute mark has already been cracked. The game has not yet been a ripper, Nicolas Höfler has just crossed directly into the goal.
17
20:49
Wolfsburg keeps the leather in their own chain of three for a long time and seems too static in structure.
15
20:47
The SC is getting stronger! Eggestein throws it back from the baseline to Ritsu Dōan, whose shot is just blocked. That can certainly be cataloged as the first significant approach to the goal.
13.
20:45
Now Eggestein acts as a preparer and plays a nice diagonal pass to Grifo on the left. The Italian fires a concealed low shot, but Koen Casteels is not threatened.
12.
20:43
Maximilian Eggestein just holds on from the second row. From the turn, he chases the ball a meter past the left angle corner.
11.
20:42
Christian Streich is already giving loud instructions from the gang. He doesn’t seem to like the defensive behavior of his team.
8th.
20:40
So far, neither team has been able to gain clear advantages. The notorious sampling phase is still running. Only the goalkeepers provide the occasional hello-awake moment.
6.
20:38
The goalkeeper’s exuberance continues. Koen Casteels comes wide of the box and fails to reach the ball. Roland Sallai hurriedly stopped the ball from the right edge of the penalty area and hit the defender in the back.
4.
20:36
What’s wrong with the goalkeepers? Mark Flekken also plays the ball directly in front of an opponent’s feet. But there is no danger.
3.
20:35
Corner now also on the opposite side. Koen Casteels and Josuha Guilavogui make a misunderstanding and lose the ball.
2.
20:34
The guests take out the first corner kick. Lucas Höler clears the cross from Maximilian Arnold somewhat unorthodoxly with the heel and makes the ball hot again.

20:32
The ball is rolling in the Europa-Park Stadium! The SC plays as usual in red and white, the VfL has slipped on the dark green away kit.

game start
20:30
Normally, the SC does not honor people as long as there is still something at stake in terms of sport. However, an exception was made for Petersen and Schmid today. Both are presented with portraits and are celebrated by the fans.
20:19
Nils Petersen and Jonathan Schmid are said goodbye before the game. Petersen has not only developed into one of the best jokers in Bundesliga history in Breisgau, but is now also the club’s record goalscorer with 89 goals. The now 32-year-old Schmid spent his entire career with SC apart from four years in Hoffenheim and Augsburg.
20:14
“Sometimes special and unexpected things happen in football,” said Christian Streich beforehand, slightly mystical. With that he let it be known that the possibility of qualifying for the Champions League group stage has not yet been completely erased from people’s minds.
20:05
Wolves won the first leg 6-0. Patrick Wimmer scored the lead after just 58 seconds, Jonas Wind pulled together a brace before the break. In general, Freiburg is struggling against teams from the top half of the table this season, with just two points against the top nine in the calendar year.
19:47
SC captain Christian Günter has to make do with a bank place after six years. Kiliann Sildillia, Manuel Gulde, Lukas Kübler and Yannik Keitel also rotate from the starting lineup. Instead, Noah Weißhaupt is allowed to play from the start for only the second time in the Bundesliga, Roland Sallai was not in the starting XI five weeks previously. Kenneth Schmidt, Philipp Lienhart and Maximilian Eggestein also get a chance. Goalkeeper Mark Flekken wears the armband today.
19:43
After the 2-1 win against Hoffenheim, Niko Kovač made only one change to his starting XI: Yannick Gerhardt was allowed to play from the start instead of Mattias Svanberg. After three defeats in a row, Christian Streich has made five changes to the team at Freiburg.
19:40
After a great race to catch up, VfL Wolfsburg is in sixth place. Whether this entitles you to participate in the Europa League or the Conference League is still in the stars and depends on the outcome of the DFB Cup final. Before looking at the final in Berlin, the wolves have to defend sixth place first. Leverkuseners who have the same number of points sit close behind their necks.
19:35
The 2:4 at Union Berlin last weekend was a big setback for the sports club. After all, they lost to their direct competitor for fourth and last place in the Champions League. The gap to fourth place is now three points. But since Union has the significantly better goal difference, Freiburg would have to score four more points than Berlin.
19:32
Have a nice evening and welcome to the start of the 33rd and penultimate Bundesliga matchday! SC Freiburg would like to keep hopes of qualifying for the Champions League, while VfL Wolfsburg would like to move into the Europa League. It starts at 8:30 p.m. in Breisgau!
