Football, Premier League: Liverpool wins and puts pressure on Manchester United

Status: 05/15/2023 10:52 p.m

With a strong final sprint to the end of the season, Liverpool FC is continuing to put pressure on the Champions League places and is currently only one point behind Manchester United – Leicester City had no chance in Monday’s game (May 15, 2023) in the Premier League.

It could have been even worse for the Foxes than the 3-0 home defeat that Reds midfielder Curtis Jones started with a brace in the first half. Jones scored first in the 33rd minute from a perfect Mo Salah cross. Three minutes later he made it 2-0 – albeit from a strong offside position – after assists from Cody Gakpo and Salah again.

Three assists but Salah shakes his head

As a result, Leicester threatened to break up. Again and again the Liverpool offensive came to dangerous conclusions, but Gakpo, Salah and Luis Diaz missed a number of great chances. 20 minutes before the end, Trent Alxeander-Arnold made it 3-0 with a free kick in the right corner, and here too the assist went back to Salah with a briefly placed ball.

The fact that he was substituted with a shake of the head in the 87th minute, despite his three assists, was due to the Egyptian’s weakness in the final. The 79th minute in particular made Salah almost despair when he was unselfishly served by Gakpo after a 2-1 counterattack, but chipped the ball past the left post from the best position. It’s getting very tight for Leicester, two games before the end of the season, the sensational champions of 2016 are in penultimate place and are in danger of relegation.

City thanks Gündogan with the preliminary decision

The day before, captain Ilkay Gündogan had scored two goals in Manchester City’s 3-0 (2-0) win at Everton and shot the leaders in the title race towards the championship because pursuers Arsenal surprisingly beat Brighton & Hove Albion 0-3 (0:1) lost.

In addition to Gündogan (37th, 51st), Erling Haaland (39th) scored his 36th goal of the season for City for the eleventh league win in a row. With 85 points, Manchester City have a four-point lead over pursuers Arsenal (81) – and also have a catch-up game in hand.

In London, Julio Enciso (51′), the German Deniz Undav (86′) after a counterattack and Pervis Estupinan (90’+6′) shot Bright & Hove to victory and Arsenal out of the title race.

Martial and Gamacho let United breathe a sigh of relief

Manchester United had already underpinned their ambitions for a place in the Champions League with a win against Wolverhampton on Saturday. United won 2-0 against the Wanderers at the start of the 36th matchday and after the last two defeats they got a win again.

Anthony Martial (32′) and Alejandro Garnacho (90′ + 5′) scored for Manchester. The Red Devils also drew level with Newcastle United on points with the win. The third-placed “Magpies” gave up the win late in the 2-2 draw at Leeds United. Rasmus Kristensen secured a vital point in Leeds’ fight against relegation with his equalizer eleven minutes from time.

Villa wins against Totttenham

Tottenham suffered a major setback in the race for a place in Europe. Spurs lost 2-1 at Aston Villa. Jacob Ramsey (8′) and Douglas Luiz (72′) scored for Villa, Harry Kane’s follow-up goal (90′, penalty) came too late. With the win, Villa drew level with Spurs in eighth place with 57 points.

Chelsea continue to wobble, Southampton relegated

Chelsea made another mistake. The “Blues”, who will play a disastrous season and miss out on international business, only managed a 2-2 (0-1) draw against relegation candidates Nottingham Forest. Kai Havertz was initially on the bench at Chelsea and was substituted on late.

Former Bundesliga striker Taiwo Awoniyi (13’/62′) scored twice for Forest, while Raheem Sterling (51’/58′) also scored twice for Chelsea.

Southampton FC is the first relegated team, who lost 2-0 (0-0) against Fulham FC and cannot catch up with two games left to play.
