FC Bayern makes BVB competition at Álvarez – Ajax demands less than 2022

Chelsea rebuffed three times

BVB and FC Bayern are in a head-to-head race for the championship. After the 34th matchday, the showdown will probably go into the next round on the transfer market. According to the usual well-informed “De Telegraaf“Borussia Dortmund and Munich are “very interested” in 25-year-old Edson Álvarez from Ajax Amsterdam.

The Mexican wanted to switch to the generous Chelsea last summer – at that time the London coach was called Thomas Tuchel, but Ajax vetoed the move despite very high offers. However, the disappointed midfielder, whose contract runs until 2025, has been promised not to put any obstacles in his path next summer.

The Blues 2022 are said to have been rejected three times: the first offer of 55 million euros and the second of 63 million euros were rejected. The third attempt envisaged a winter transfer for 52 million euros, but the Dutch record champions did not want to give up a regular player after the departures of Antony and Lisandro Martínez (both Man United), Sébastien Haller (BVB) and Ryan Gravenberch (FC Bayern).

BVB and FC Bayern interested: Ajax ready to sell Álvarez for 40 million

A mixed Eredivisie season later, which will end in 3rd or 4th place, Ajax appear ready to negotiate Álvarez. Contact person for Borussia and Bayern will be Sven Mislintat, who starts his job as technical director on May 19th. The 50-year-old worked as a scout for BVB for eleven years and transferred to Munich during his time at VfB Benjamin Pavard – so we know each other.

At BVB, Álvarez would not act as a 1-for-1 replacement for Jude Bellingham, whose sale is likely to fetch over 100 million euros, as he is more defensive. For the Mexican – as the “Bild” reported at the beginning of May – “De Telegraaf” also writes of a transfer fee of 40 million euros and thus significantly less than the amount that was rejected by Chelsea in 2022. The fact that Ajax should “only” ask for 40 million euros could be due to the fact that Mislintat, should the deal go through in June, would have more than two months to try to find a replacement. Some of Chelsea’s offers did not arrive until the deadline day – in addition, Álvarez promised to let him go if a suitable offer came up.

The rumored fee would make the “six” the most expensive entry in BVB history, while Munich paid five times more for a transfer. From Ajax’s point of view, there should probably be a betting between the Bundesliga giants: FC Bayern have deeper pockets than Borussia, but sporting director Sebastian Kehl will have more leeway after the likely departure of Bellingham – Mislintat also knows that. Álvarez joined Amsterdam in 2019 for €15m from CF America and has made 144 appearances for Ajax so far.
