He played 36 international matches and was captain of the Dutch national team for many years. With Feyenoord he became champion in 1984. Side by side with stars such as Johan Cruijff, Ruud Gullit, Ivan Nielsen, Joop Hiele, Peter Houtman and Mario Been. Van Hanegem was assistant coach at Feyenoord at the time.
