FC Burnley pulls purchase option for Beyer – most expensive Gladbach homegrown

Jordan Beyer will not return to regular club Borussia Mönchengladbach in the summer. Burnley, to whom the centre-back is currently on loan, announced on Wednesday that the option to buy had been exercised. Sports director Roland Virkus confirmed in April that this was 15 million euros. The 22-year-old is now tied to the club until June 30, 2027, which has been promoted to the Premier League as champions of the Championship.

Due to the change, Beyer ranks fifth among Borussia’s most expensive departures. Never before has a homegrown child left the “foals” for a higher sum, so far Marcell Jansen (for 14 million euros to FC Bayern) had held the record. Beyer switched to the Bundesliga youth team in 2015 at the age of 15 and, with the exception of one loan to Hamburger SV (second half of the 2019/20 season), played there.

In total, the native of Kempen made 36 appearances for the Borussia pros, but was never able to earn a permanent place. Beyer is set for the “Clarets” under coach Vincent Kompany and has made 35 appearances this season. Its market value jumped from EUR 4 million to EUR 10 million when it was last updated in March.

“I lifted the trophy on Monday, won the league and am now ready to become a Claret permanently. I have enjoyed being here since entering this building. For me it feels like home. I love playing at Turf Moor and partying with the fans and hopefully that will be the case next year,” Beyer is quoted as saying in the press release.
