When it comes to used cars, there are many traps that potential buyers can fall into. As is so often the case, preparation is everything. Or do you want to be ripped off?
When looking for a used car, you shouldn’t limit yourself to just one model. It makes more sense to choose three to five models that meet your own needs in terms of space or performance, reports the trade journal “auto motor sport” (11/23 issue).
Before you then compare offers, the following applies: research on the Internet to identify possible problem areas of the desired car, which you can then check during an inspection and test drive.
This preparation is said to be essential to reduce the risk of repair costs after a purchase.
Search and call nationally
It is just as important not only to look for offers in the area, but to search nationwide. The best way to do this is to use the usual online platforms. Buyers also get a better overview of the price level.
If you have found an interesting offer from a dealer or seller, the experts recommend that you always make contact by phone first. When you call, for example, any open questions can be clarified immediately.
Viewing only in daylight
You should only arrange a viewing appointment during the day and if possible not when it is raining, in order to be able to better identify possible scratches or damage.
It is also helpful to take a companion with you. Under no circumstances should you forget your smartphone or a small camera, which makes the important underbody check easier.
In the case of cheaper used cars up to 10,000 euros, the inspection should be particularly careful because of the mostly advanced age and the usually higher mileage.
The test drive of a used car is mandatory. As soon as you get in, you need to look out for unpleasant smells or visible signs of wear and tear.
You should drive at least 10 to 15 kilometers, even at higher speeds, to detect possible defects in the drive, steering, chassis or brakes.
Negotiate after the test drive
The price negotiations for a used car should always take place after the test drive. This is the only way to address and adequately consider identified damage, technical flaws or upcoming investments.
Once you have reached an agreement and the contract is in place, the experts advise you to be quick. Because a good offer could quickly be snapped up by others.
This applies in particular to the cheaper used vehicles up to 10,000 euros. Here the seller is in a better negotiating position due to the higher demand.
