March for peace in Kortrijk on May 8

There are commemorations in many places, including Kortrijk, where they held a march for peace this afternoon.

From the Schouwburgplein in Kortrijk, the peace committee, a collaboration of eight organizations, is moving to the Lowered Leieboorden. The committee especially wants to reach young people so that they too never forget the horror of the Second World War.

The end of the First World War is a holiday with Armistice Day, but the capitulation of the Germans in 1945 is no longer.

“We want to make May 8 a holiday again, the celebration of the liberation of so many years ago. In our country it has disappeared, elsewhere it is not. The Netherlands has been busy for several days and in France today is a national holiday, nobody goes to work. Here in Belgium there is nothing. We really want to make it feel from the bottom up that that freedom, that peace, is an important thing,” it sounds.
