The ice rink in Klazienaveen is again full of young and old timers

“Very successful”, is how Jan Veenstra calls the classic car day in Klazienaveen on Sunday afternoon. The fourth edition of the event attracted an estimated 2,500 visitors and some 350 classic vehicles were on display. According to Veenstra, this was above expectations. “We would have been happy if 150 vehicles had come.”

The oldtimer day is organized by the Klazienerveen Youngtimer Friends, a group of twelve friends with a passion for oldtimers and youngtimers. In 2015 they organized the event for the first time, but in recent years corona has thrown a spanner in the works.

Veenstra was therefore very pleased with the interest generated by the cars, motorcycles, tractors and mopeds. “People feel like coming to such shows again.” The visitors could view the vehicles on the ice rink in Klazienaveen.

A condition for registering a vehicle was that it was a youngtimer (at least twenty years old) or oldtimer (forty years or older). Yesterday afternoon, for example, many American sleds, such as Cadillacs, were on display.

The vehicle that attracted the most attention was a pre-war tractor of the Normag brand. “I think it was built in the late 1930s,” says Veenstra. In addition, there was also a motorcycle that drove on the TT a few decades ago.

The group of friends intends to organize the event again in early May next year. “Although the necessary permits made it more difficult to organize it than before corona,” says Veenstra.

And should the enthusiasm increase even further, the classic carriages can simply remain on the ice rink for the time being. “In terms of surface area, we still have room to expand it here.”
