Hertha BSC: Lukas Ullrich on the medical check at Borussia Mönchengladbach

DFB U19 captain

For months Borussia Mönchengladbach has been the favorite to sign German U19 national team captain Lukas Ullrich from Hertha BSC – now the decision has apparently been made. As the “Picture” reported, the 19-year-old left-back stayed with the “foals” on Tuesday to complete the medical check-up. It has been officially clear since March that Ullrich will leave his training club in the summer after eight years. Then Ullrich’s contract with the “Old Lady” expires.

Last year, Gladbach was one of several Bundesliga clubs interested in talent that could be used anywhere on the left. However, Hertha opted for an extension and then tried to show Ullrich a perspective in the club. The player refused, Hertha said in the person of sports director Benjamin Weber: “The essentials have been said on the subject. It’s a longer term issue. The decision has been made and of course we accept it.”

Ullrich has been a regular at Hertha BSC II in the Regionalliga Nordost most of the time this season – he hasn’t been part of the squad since the beginning of April – but he’s still waiting for his first professional appearance. According to the “Bild”, Eintracht Frankfurt is said to have campaigned aggressively for the youngster until the very end. At the end of March, following the rumours, Ullrich had increased his market value to 750,000 euros. Only three players are more valuable in all regional leagues: Lovro Zvonarek (1.5 million), Lucas Copado (1 million) and Eyüp Aydin (800 thousand), all of whom are active at FC Bayern Munich II. In addition, Luka Hyryläinen from 1899 Hoffenheim II is on par with the still-Berliner.
