Driver who killed six carnivalists at 150 km/h may leave prison with an ankle bracelet | Interior

The council chamber of Tournai has decided to place Paolo Falzone, the driver who killed six carnivalists more than a year ago in Strépy-Bracquegnies, Hainaut, under electronic surveillance. That makes it possible for the 34-year-old man to be released with an ankle bracelet. The public prosecutor of Mons-Tournai is appealing against the decision.

Last month, the reconstruction of the tragedy took place. The collision, which took place around 5 a.m. on March 20, 2022, left six people dead and about forty injured. The victims all took part in a traditional carnival procession in Strépy-Bracquegnies.

It was driver Paolo Falzone who drove into the group of carnivalists with his BMW. He and his passenger Antonino Falzone were immediately arrested. During the breath test, Paolo appeared to have slightly exceeded the legally permitted alcohol percentage. He was filming himself and drove into the carnivalists at a speed of more than 150 kilometers per hour. Shortly after the drama, it was reported that capsules with laughing gas would be present in the car, but that turned out not to be the case, the public prosecutor clarified.

Paolo, 34, was first charged with involuntary manslaughter and involuntary assault and battery in the context of a traffic accident. In August 2022, the court reclassified the facts as the manslaughter of one victim – carvavalsgille Frédéric d’Andrea – and the involuntary killing of five victims. Antonino Falzone, in turn, was accused of failing to help a person in need, but was released on conditions.
