With disco house and big pop gestures, the Brit blossomed into a diva with a presence everywhere.
As a “UK hit writer”, the promo text points to THAT! FEEL GOOD! jessie ware off That’s not a lie. The Briton, who accompanied Harry Styles on tour last year, has developed more and more in the direction of the mainstream over the past decade. For example, while she was still working with then-post-dubstepper SBTRKT early in her career, recent hits like “Pearls,” written with Zoot Woman’s Stuart Price, sound like disco house for the charts.
Otherwise, the album is full of dance music songs, not unlike those of the British colleagues from Jungle. The title track opens the LP with ASMR shenanigans that twist the sex appeal of queer genres like house and disco with musical humor, but lack the depth of Róisín Murphy. This works far better on the slower “Hello Love”, in which Ware, surrounded by choirs and wind instruments, blossoms into a full-length, continuously present diva. Numbers like “Begin Again”, which are entertaining but still have the necessary seriousness, suit her very well.
