BVB: Mats Hummels on course for a record – 15th Bundesliga season in a row with a goal

Mats Hummels had to wait until matchday 29, longer than ever before, but against Eintracht Frankfurt (4-0) it was finally time: The 34-year-old scored his first goal of the season in the Bundesliga. The BVB professional keeps his record course in the German upper house. The centre-back, number 15, scored in the 15th Bundesliga season in a row – only the seventh player in history. Hummels is only missing one more season for the record.

In front of him is a quintet around ex-BVB sports director Michael Zorc, who brought Hummels to Dortmund twice. From the 1982/83 to 1997/98 season, the defensive midfielder scored 131 goals. Only offensive player Bernd Nickel managed more in 16 seasons, netting a total of 141 times between 1967/68 and 1982/83. Olaf Thon (1984/85–1999/00), Holger Fach (1981/82–1996/97) and Willi Neuberger (1966/67–1981/82) also scored 16 Bundesliga seasons in a row.

In the shadow of Hummels, other active Bundesliga professionals are advancing. BVB colleague Marco Reus and Bayern Munich’s Thomas Müller have scored 14 consecutive seasons. Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Lars Stindl has 13 seasons and FC Augsburg’s Daniel Caligiuri has 12 seasons in a row.

“It’s good that the series continues,” Hummels said briefly and concisely via Twitter about his advancement in the rankings. His teammates also praised the strong performance against Eintracht. “Mats played an outstanding game,” said Julian Brandt. Hummels is one reason why BVB “was a bit more stable than in Stuttgart”. When the game was overwhelmed (3:3), the vice-captain had to be substituted at half-time when the score was 2:0.
