Wes Brown was a star at English soccer giants Manchester United for many years, winning everything there was to win with the “Red Devils” and raking in millions. Now Wes Brown is broke at 43.
According to English media reports, Brown earned around £50,000 (around €56,500) at ManUnited during his heyday – per week, of course!
The Brit played for United from 1996 to 2011, winning the Champions League twice (1999 and 2007), five league titles and two FA Cups with the club. Brown is a legend at the club and the player’s memories will live on. Nothing remains of his millions, that’s official.
On February 27, the British tax authority HMRC filed for bankruptcy against Brown. Two months later it is black and white: the former star is bankrupt, a court in Manchester declared the 43-year-old insolvent last Thursday.
Brown’s marriage ended after 13 years
Privately, Brown had already been shipwrecked last year. In the summer he separated from his wife Leanne, with whom he has been together since 2009 and with whom he has three children. Leanne has some celebrity status herself, once appearing on the reality TV show Real Housewives of Cheshire.
The couple had apparently had financial difficulties for a long time. In 2016, the Browns drastically reduced the price of their Prestbury villa, according to the Daily Mirror, and offered it for £2.4 million (2.7 million euros). Six years earlier the property was on the market for £4.5m (€5m).
Wes Brown isn’t the first football star to lose his millions. He probably won’t be the last either.
